Work 1: Understand the way to assess the information and knowledge needs
1.1 Discuss the range of decision making
Choosing one of the different options available is called to make a decision. There is a lot of research and knowledge needed to make decisions. All stakeholders must be involved in making decisions. There are various stages starting from the problem recognition. There are mainly two types of decisions that means programmed and non-programmed decisions. Sequential decisions are for routine tasks and we know the best possible solutions. Nom-programmed decisions are for issues that are not always present and this issue is very new to all stakeholders (Klein, 1993). In case of NHS hospitals, two major issues are pending long waiting list and units and hospitals are closed. These issues will come under non-programmed decisions because the organization does not know the possible solution of the problem. The decision making situation is very uncertain and in this case decision will be taken by the high level management. There can be various decisions for reducing wait time for customers. The number of doctors can be increased. The time for the availability of the doctor can be extended. The appointment can be given online and the customer should know his number and time at which he can see the doctor. The number of patients going to a doctor in one day can also be restricted.

Appropriate information and knowledge are important for making effective decisions for the welfare of the organization. This information can be collected from previous data available. Knowledge can be collected from various stakeholders such as staff members, patients, doctors, owners etc. In addition to facing the problem, patients will be able to understand this issue better. The key issue in NHS hospitals is long waiting list and wait time. Patients have to wait for the whole day to see the doctor. The following information and knowledge are necessary to make effective decisions on the problem:
